A film about the life of Kiyoshi Yamashita, a Japanese painter with disabilities.

Sent to an institution for mentally handicapped children by his parents, he began creating artworks using torn strips of paper. After running away to avoid army conscription, he began his wanderings around Japan, encountering many scenes which he would recreate as torn paper art from his amazing photographic memory.

The hero, who wants to volunteer to help with his neighbor's funeral, is unexpectedly confronted with the most shocking truth of his life - the deceased is his close relative. During the days he spends in cemeteries, the hero meets various people, witnesses their painful and touching stories. These acquaintances change his worldview, but at the same time they drag him into an increasingly hopeless situation.

The plot addresses Maria Luísa's struggle for freedom, the struggle for rights and privileges that, at the time, were reserved almost exclusively to men. Maria Luísa decides to assume a false identity - that of a man.

March 1941. Sentenced to a long prison term, Brigade Commander (Kombrig) Gorbatov is released from the Lubyanka and shortly afterward takes command of a unit at the front. A capable leader, he quickly rises through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant general and commanding an army. Compared with other Soviet commanders, including Georgy Zhukov, Gorbatov is distinguished by understanding the realities of the modern battlefield, the independence of courts and decisions and the ability to persuade his superiors.

Rosalina comes back after her music cruise, but Michel (the French guy Rosalina kissed on the cruise) also comes back, criticizes Nat's music, and kisses Rosalina which Nat sees. This causes a heated fight between Nat and Rosalina in which they break up and Rosalina quits the band.
